Nursing Scholarship Program 2011 at Health Resources and Services Administration
Introduction : The Nursing Scholarship Program is a selective program of the U.S. Government that helps alleviate the critical shortage of registered nurses currently experienced by certain types of health care facilities by helping needy students complete their registered nurse training. In exchange for the scholarship, upon graduation, the newly minted nurses work at these types of facilities for at least 2 years. Nursing Scholars fulfilling their service commitment receive a competitive salary and benefits package, which they negotiate directly with the employing facility. Applications are accepted once each year. Applicants selected to receive the scholarship are notified by email no later than August 31.

Monthly stipend ($1,289 for the 2011-2012 school year)
Eligibility :
U.S. citizens (born or naturalized), nationals or lawful permanent residents.
Enrolled or accepted for enrollment in a professional registered nurse program (baccalaureate, graduate, associate degree, or diploma) at accredited school of nursing located in a U.S. state or territory.
Begin classes no later than September 30.
Free from any Federal judgment liens.
Free from existing service commitments.
Not delinquent on a Federal debt.
Selection Criteria : Preference is given to qualified applicants with the greatest financial need who are enrolled full-time in an undergraduate nursing program. In FY 2010, 458 applicants were selected to receive the scholarship. First preference for funding is given to eligible applicants who: have a zero Expected Family Contribution (EFC) on the Student Aid Report from the Free Application for Federal Student Assistance (FAFSA) and are enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an undergraduate nursing program as full-time students.
Application Deadline : The online application must be submitted by 5 pm ET on June 1, 2011. All supporting documents must be uploaded (preferred method) or faxed by June 1, 2011. Applicants are strongly encouraged to upload all required supporting documents, which will expedite the review and award process.
Application Procedure : A complete application package consists of:
Submitting a complete online NSP application;
Uploading or faxing all required supporting documentation; AND if applicable,
Uploading or faxing a letter on official letterhead from the entity to which the applicant’s existing service obligation is owed, indicating there is no potential conflict in fulfilling the service commitment to the NSP and that the NSP service commitment will be served first.

Completed Authorization to Release Information
;Proof of U.S. Citizenship, U.S. national or Lawful Permanent Resident (e.g. copy of birth certificate, certificate of citizenship, passport, or naturalization certificate);
Completed Verification of Acceptance/Good Standing Report;
Copy of Student Aid Report;
Completed Academic Recommendation Letter;
Completed Non-Academic Recommendation Letter;
Completed Essay Questions; and
Copy of Unofficial Transcript(s).
